North West province pulls off a combination almost nowhere else manages: a genuine Big Five safari and a blockbuster resort water park within the same short drive of Johannesburg. Pilanesberg National Park is the safari half, and crucially it is malaria-free, which means parents can take young children on game drives to find lion, elephant, and rhino without the antimalarial calculus that rules out so much of Africa. Game drives are gentle and guided, some lodges run junior-ranger style activities, and a hot air balloon at dawn turns the whole thing into something a child will retell for years.

Right next door, Sun City supplies the other kind of day. Its Valley of Waves is a full water park with an artificial beach and a wave pool, backed by mini-golf, an adventure playground, and wildlife encounters, while parents quietly slip off to the spa or the golf. Around the edges, the region adds real depth: the Lesedi Cultural Village for dances and storytelling, the Taung fossil site for budding scientists, and the Magaliesberg hills for hikes, zip-lining, and the Hartbeespoort cableway. The accommodation splits neatly between safari lodges in Pilanesberg and resort hotels at Sun City with pools and kids' clubs, which lets a family alternate wild mornings with poolside afternoons. For a first African safari with children, this pairing of real wildlife and resort comfort is hard to beat.
