Set on a rise above the medieval hamlet of Bagno Vignoni, ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE looks out over the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia, the stretch of southern Tuscany that most people picture when they picture Italy: cypress lines, clay hills, and wheat fields running to the horizon. The building was designed to disappear into it, built from Tuscan limestone, travertine, olive wood, and terracotta, with 90 rooms spread across five low wings connected underground to the main villa. Thermal water surfaces from the Bagno Vignoni spring at around 50C and is cooled to a steady 36C across more than 1,000 square meters of indoor and outdoor pools that stay open all year. Accommodation is refreshingly simple to navigate: 35 square meter Superior rooms that take two adults plus one child, and eleven two-bedroom Family Suites at around 50 square meters, the only format here that gives parents a door to close at bedtime. Rates include the thermal pools, the five saunas, the gym and daily yoga classes, an afternoon snack, and the daily guided hiking and cycling program through the surrounding countryside.

Childcare begins at four, which is also the minimum guest age here, so this is a resort for families past the crib stage rather than one for babies. The AKI kids club opens at 09.30 on most days and, unusually, keeps running into the evening, which is the detail that turns a wellness hotel into a workable family stay: parents can take a long, unhurried dinner under the restaurant's retractable glass roof while the children are still supervised. The program is nature-led rather than screen-led, with children's yoga, gardening in the resort's own beds, crafts, and supervised 20-minute floats in a thermal Watsu pool that otherwise sits inside the adults-only spa world. Beyond the club there is a heated children's pool at the same 36C as the adult thermal pools, a 25-meter sports pool with a wild-river channel, and enough lawn to run off a morning. Free e-bike hire and a shared electric car put Pienza fifteen minutes away and Montalcino twenty, so families can dip in and out of the region without planning a thing. It is a quiet property, and it rewards families who want their vacation slow.
