Own a village for a week: guests stay inside a genuine restored medieval hamlet with its own church, piazza and artisan workshops, not a hotel styled to look like one
Working organic estate: 1,100 hectares of certified-organic vineyards, olive groves and gardens supply the restaurants and become the children's activities
Ferragamo craft workshops: kids and parents can watch village goldsmiths, leatherworkers and painters at work, a hands-on heritage few estates offer
Farmhouses that sleep a whole family: multi-bedroom Borrigiani houses with private kitchens and pools suit families of five-plus and multi-gen groups
Il Borro is a thousand-year-old medieval hamlet set inside an 1,100-hectare organic estate in the Valdarno, the stretch of eastern Tuscany between Florence, Arezzo and the Chianti hills. Owned by the Ferragamo family and part of Relais & Châteaux, it was restored building by building from 1993 onward, and the result is a car-free stone village of cobbled lanes, artisan workshops, a small church and a piazza, wrapped in vineyards and olive groves. Accommodation is unusually well suited to families who need room to spread out. Alongside 38 suites in the village and 20 more in the family-oriented Aie del Borro farmhouses, the estate rents a collection of private villas and independent farmhouses, several with their own private pools, private kitchens and gardens. The three-bedroom family suite and the multi-bedroom Borrigiani farmhouses, each with two double bedrooms across self-contained apartments, make this one of the more workable options in Italy for a family of five or more that wants space rather than a single crowded room.
The estate is a working organic farm and winery, and that is what it hands the children rather than a conventional kids club. Little guests can take part in supervised kids' cooking classes where the chef bakes what they knead, learn to ride at the equestrian center from age five with lessons and gymkhanas, play on the family tennis courts, and follow the artisans at work in the village workshops. Younger children can join activities with a parent or under the care of a professional babysitter arranged by the resort, which fills the gap left by the absence of a daily club. Dining spans a Michelin-recognized gourmet room at Osteria del Borro, relaxed Tuscan cooking at Il Borro Tuscan Bistro, and a genuinely family-friendly pizzeria, Il Pomario, over in the Aie, while villa and farmhouse guests can self-cater or book a private chef. With a spa, a freshwater infinity pool, gentle countryside walks and one of Tuscany's serious wine estates on the doorstep, it is built for parents who want the real Tuscany without giving up comfort.
