Michelin Green Star on site: Artifex holds a Green Michelin Star and opens for a dedicated family evening every Wednesday, so the gourmet table does not close to you once you have kids
100 meter speed slide: The action pool slide ends at a professional stopwatch, which occupies older kids for entire afternoons with no adult involvement required
Working equestrian center: Free pony rides run several times a week inside the childcare program, with paid riding lessons year round
100% energy self-sufficient: The resort produces all its own heat and electricity from a local wood chip boiler and its own hydroelectric plant
The Pflersch Valley runs west from the Brenner Pass and ends in a wall of rock, and Feuerstein sits right at the end of it at 1,250 meters, with the Tribulaun massif filling the windows. This is a 5-star mountain resort built by the Mader family on the site of a former farmstead, and the building still reads that way: silver quartzite, loden, wool and spruce, glass walls that pull the valley indoors, and a low profile that stays deferential to the landscape rather than announcing itself. Rooms start at 35 sqm, and almost everything above double-room level comes with a separate children's bedroom rather than a sofa bed in the corner of yours. Family rooms run from 38 to 50 sqm and sleep up to six, family suites reach 105 sqm in the Azurit penthouse and the Saphir, and two standalone chalets of 70 and 75 sqm sleep six behind their own front door. Every category has a balcony or terrace facing the mountains, and the whole resort runs on its own wood chip boiler and hydroelectric plant, making it fully energy self-sufficient.
Childcare is the spine of the place: 70 hours a week, ages zero to sixteen, run on Montessori principles by a team that spends most of the day outdoors. Babies are taken from zero months in the Baby and Mini Room, there is a parent-and-baby room open around the clock, and the rental list covers prams, carriers, monitors, bouncers and swim aids, so you can travel light. The children's world is genuinely unusual: a wood workshop where kids saw and carve, a play barn with a hayloft and climbing wall, a mud room, a painting studio, a sports arena, and free pony rides several times a week at the on-site riding stables. Meals are built around bedtimes, with supervised lunch and dinner for children in the kids restaurant, baby food jars and homemade porridge available all day, and a five-course menu for parents from 18.30. The 3,000 sqm Mountain Spa splits cleanly: a family side with a 100 meter speed slide and a baby pool held at 34 to 35 degrees, and a four-floor adults-only side with a rooftop whirlpool. Nobody has to give anything up.
